When you are visiting a friend, you can see the player's avatar in the top-right corner of the screen. It shows general information about experience and reputation level, and sometimes a small round icon with a picture of a resource. This is the very resource type you will get for helping this friend. All players have different resources, and the one you will obtain for helping a friend is assigned randomly.
