Tap your name or avatar in the top panel of the screen. The window will appear and you will be prompted to enter a name or choose a new appearance. Keep in mind that these are the attributes other players will recognize you by!

You choose your name and portrait at the start of the game. You can change them later on from the settings menu. Changing your portrait is free, changing your name costs diamonds.
